The booklet „Wissenschaft in Österreich/Science in Austria 2024“ provides a concise overview of higher education and research institutions with their exceptional achievements in science and research as well as the education and training of students in schools and higher education, showing their heterogeneity. These achievements are – as the foundation for the innovative strength of Austria – not only giving impetus for societal development, social fairness and for the innovation in order to manage the challenges of our time, but also the prerequisite for Austria’s economic prosperity and international competitiveness. Internationalization, cooperation and competition in science and research are key factors for quality, development and success.
In comparison with other EU-member states Austria has the highest public expenditure on tertiary education as a percentage of GDP (1,6%). Total public expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP reaches 4,9%. Austria’s R&D-quota – expenditures on Research and Development in relation to GDP – stands at 3,22%, rising continually. 301 project coordinations in Horizon Europe show how successful Austrian higher education and research institutions are with regard to national but also EU-Research programs.
